About Us

We are a team of ordinary Northern folk, with a passion for food, not just any old food but quality local and regional food. Between us we have over 100 years experience in the food industry and logistics and when not directly involved in the actual food business - we all love eating cooking and discussing good food.
The idea behind Food Local Food was born from Alison Taylor’s frustration with small food businesses' inability to compete with large supermarkets.  Always a contrary person, not good at accepting the status quo (she could have an argument in an empty room), she could see that this inability to compete was leading to a raw deal for suppliers, which in turn meant that customers were just accepting poor choice and poor quality food in exchange for convenience.
She felt strongly that small businesses should not be forced to grow if they did not want to, but should be supported to reach new markets if they did, and that hankering after what used to be - a wide selection of quality artisan suppliers that consumers used all the time on a local high street - without changing the system in some way, was a waste of time.  You can't (nor is it always desirable to) turn back the clock.
So after a year's research she developed the plan that is www.foodlocalfood.com  so that suppliers large and small can work together to be who they are at their best and provide this to the customer in the fairest market place possible, in an environment that celebrates choice, freshness, seasonality and provenance.
Supported 100% by her husband, she set up the company in January 2008 and started to trade in March of that Year.   She found a fellow cohort in Suzi Howey, a woman who had the same vision and a passion for Local Food as Alison had, and it is that great partnership between Alison & Suzi that created the company Food Local Food as it is today. We were delighted that hard work was recognied in a small way by being named Best Business in the Wansbeck Rio Tinto Awards for 2009.

Though Food Local Food is still in its infancy and is less than a ripple in a pond, it does what it’s designed to do.   Delivering great food, conveniently to the customer at an affordable price, supporting small suppliers and celebrating the best the North East has to offer.

Food Local Food says ...
"We know there are ordinary people out there who care about the food they eat and who don’t have enormous unending food budgets.  We also know our customers care about where their food comes from and are excited to taste the best this region has to offer, as you have so loyally supported us since March 2008. So Suzi & I thank you for vindicating our vision."

We would like to thank those organisations over time that have supported us. Firstly thank you to GO WANSBECK, the first public sector body to give us start-up funding and finance, crucial to setting up and giving us the confidence to continue. Thank you  also to Business Link North East for helping us source other funding opportunities and support.   Finally thank you to RELF, a Regional European Loan scheme, and BIG BIG [ no even bigger than that!]  thank you to Paul Nursaw, our mentor, provided by RELF and he has been worth 50 times the loan money, and he is a pretty fabulous guy to boot!.

Thank you for looking at our site

The Food Local Food Team
I have written a little blog about everyone in the team so you have a sense of who we are (well who we are from my perspective) Alison
Alison & Paul Taylor – (my hubby and I) The Founders of  Food Local Food  I am the Managing Director, the brains (such as they are) and one of the two driving forces behind Food Local Food. I have a background in Food Service, Economic Regeneration and Politics. I have spent 20 years in Social Enterprise and the Voluntary sector in one guise or another and am passionate about supporting small businesses and innovating to make the impossible possible. I am a complete foodie and imagine myself to be a great cook – not sure everyone would agree with that!  Paul has a background in retail, fresh produce and IT.  When no one else would support my idea in its fledgling state, he agreed the family finances such as they were (all of them) could be used in support and without that money and thousands of hours of his time Food Local Food would not exist today.
Suzi Howey – Creative Director and shareholder - The other driving force behind Food Local Food – what a force - (ex-copper and psychologist) not a woman to be messed with!  She is a passionate foodie with a PR background and if I described myself as the brains behind the company then to apply the same analogy she is the heart and mouth of Food Local Food - one of the first people to really get what I wanted to do.  A woman passionate about good food, great service and supporting our North East suppliers, she is someone always on the side of the supplier and keeps our customers in touch with the business.  An even better cook than I am (that’s only just possible!!), she is one to meet and one you will remember.

As to our Soul...

Phil Mumby – Volunteer, Driver, Strategist and Foodie – what can I say, another star in our team, nothing is too much trouble, integrity from every fibre of his being, only slightly less opinionated than me (which says something as there are very few people more opinionated than me!).  Gives us a different perspective on what we do and freely gives his time and his very valuable and relevant business experience - he keeps it all very real; a  huge thank you from both Suzi & I.

Jo Darby - Office Manager, DIY expert, and efficiency personified, she is responsible for the ordering at the North East hub; the smooth running of the office and is a ray of sunshine in the office regardless of how stressed the office becomes. Mark Fielding - Sales and Marketing Manager, also our unofficial IT Guru and though he has only been in the organisation a relatively short time, he is someone who has had a huge impact on how we do things.  Gill McLean - North East Hub Manager she manages the pack and dispatch and distribution process, has challenged the way we have done things and brought our picking mistakes down to a minimum and welcome to Alison Marsh- Assistant to the Managing Director who starts work knocking is all into shape on the 1st February 2010.  Last by not least Laura Bolton Wilson, who has left us as our Manager at the end of December to go back home to Scotland , but is still helping out with special projects; we miss her dreadfully in the office but happy to still have her involved.  Roll on the Glasgow hub!

The Rest Of The Team - Big thank-you’s to  Kirsty, Kelly, Dan, Lee, Jamie, Ann, Kat and Louisa who all help on a part time basis with administration, driving or pack and dispatch. We mustn’t forget to say grateful thanks also to the Taylor & Howey children for all their leafleting and to our customers who give us such great and loyal support.
